Biography

Pierre Boussaguet was born in 1962 in Albi, France. The accordion was Pierre’s first instrument, quickly over shadowed by the acoustic bass which he discovered during a concert by the Ray Bryant trio. Pierre’s first formal training was with the well-known classical bassist, Jean Cros. At the age of twenty, Pierre met Jimmy Woode at a concert given in Albi. Woode was none other than the bassist for Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald. Impressed by Pierre’s talent and love of music, Woode offered to help, and Pierre had the rare opportunity to study with one of the most important bassists in the history of jazz.

Next stop Paris! Pierre joined Gerard Badini’s big band in 1985, followed shortly after by his encounter with saxophonist Guy Lafitte, one of the most important French jazz musicians of the post war period. In 1985 too, Pierre took a gamble, to try and meet the formidable Ray Brown. What would have seemed if not outlandish, at least unlikely, actually happened. Brown took Pierre Boussaguet under his wing, and together they toured Europe with their duo, “Two Bass Hits”. The duo also made two recording together.

Recognized as one of the finest bassist in the world today, Pierre Boussaguet has played with many of the legends of jazz; Milt Jackson, Harry “Sweets Edison”, Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Monty Alexander, Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Rowles, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Monty Alexander, Phil Woods, Bob Berg, Randy Brecker, Daniel Humair, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Bryant, Lou Donaldson, Tete Montoliu…

Pierre Boussaguet is best known for his incredible sound and his rhythmic precision. Sought out as well by today’s jazz musicians, Pierre accompanied Diana Krall on her world tour in 2002 “The Look of Love” and even a concert with Elton John.
Wynton Marsalis dedicated one of his tunes to Pierre in his album “Marciac Suite”. Lalo Schifrin likes Pierre for his amazing show “Jazz meets the Symphony”. Navigating between stage and studio, his projects and partners are countless: Continuing recording collaborations are with Niels lan Doky trio (“The Look of Love”, “Scandinavian Reminiscence”, ”The Russian Album”), Boulou and Elios Ferré (“Parisian Passion”, “Live DVD in Montpellier”, “Brothers to Brothers”) Ignasi Terraza trio (It’s Coming”, “In a sentimental Groove”). He is also the leader of a new musical project with his own quartet “From the Duke to the King”, a tribute to Duke Ellington and yes…Elvis Presley!

Pierre is also a well-established composer and has a tasteful sense for arranging. His music is played regularly in the context of the concert hall as well on radio and television.
